Using multiple Google accounts simultaneously with Prism

I've just moved another of my emails over to Google Apps (even after the trouble I had in the past) and needed to find a way to manage my multiple Google accounts. Some of thesugges ted solutions were:

  • Using a different browser for each account which is a pain in the pass and I just don't like IE
  • Using different Firefox profiles for each account which is less of a pain in the ass but you can't have more than one open at a time
  • Using the CookieSwap addon for firefox to swap your cookies between the different accounts, which is probably works pretty good, but still doesn't allow you to access more than one at a time.

What I ended up doing was using the new Prism application (get the latest version from here) from Mozilla Labs and created different web apps for my different domains. This allows me to open up the different Google Apps as different "applications" that are not limited to your Firefox window. It works great.

The only problem with Prism at the moment is that it doesn't support many of the good Firefox extensions out there (or the other way around). I really wanted to use GTDGmail, and even after I hacked it to get it to install, it didn't work quite right. Hopefully Prism will get more extension support in the very near future.

I think Prism is really going to come into it's own in the next year or two when more and more people start migrating from their fully offline apps like Microsoft Office to web based versions like Google Docs. It won't be long (it might already be in it) when it has the same offline support that Firefox 3 has, taking away the downside of online apps.

What else are you using Prism for?
